Passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2018, surrounded by his family at his residence in Silver Spring, MD. Beloved husband of 61 years to Elizabeth Seidl; loving father of Frances E. (Brian ) Gamble, Barbara A. Bar-Haim and George M. Seidl. Grandfather of Lauren (Patrick ) Murphy, Alissa Aronstam, Jacklyn Gamble, Steven Gamble, Callie Seidl, Jacob Bar-Haim and Hailey Bar-Haim. Brother of Catherine Seidl Catlett.

George was the son of Katherine and George Seidl who were born in Bavaria, Germany and immigrated to the U.S. in the 1920’s and settled in Washington, D.C.George and his sister spent part of their childhood living in Germany during the depression years. They returned to the U.S. in 1935 eventually moving to Bethesda, MD. George went to school at Our Lady of Lourdes in Bethesda and Bethesda Chevy Chase High School. He joined the Merchant Marines in 1947 and traveled around the world before being drafted into the Army in 1951 and served through 1953. When he returned home, he joined his father’s company, George Seidl and Sons, and together with his brother-in-law, Melvin Catlett, they built a successful masonry business. George was an extremely hard worker and the business flourished because of his diligent work ethic. He worked into his 70’s and apprenticed his own son, George, who is a talented mason in his own right. George enjoyed his retirement visiting family in Germany, as well as visiting with his children and grandchildren and was affectionately known as “Opa”. His devoted wife, Betty, was his rock and she has spent the last few years as his caregiver and driver.

Relatives and friends may call at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD, (Valet Parking), Sunday, March 11, , from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Andrew Apostle Church, 11600 Kemp Mill Rd., Silver Spring, MD, on Monday, March 12, at 10 AM. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mustard Seed Community, 29 Janes Avenue,Medfield, MA 02052.
