April 3 2018: ISLAND, Beverly

Beverly Island, 89, of Bethesda, Maryland passed away on Friday, March 30.  She was the daughter of Frank and Alwilda Munger. Along with her brother, Kenneth, and sister Norma, she was raised on a ranch near Kadoka, South Dakota. She graduated from business college in nearby Rapid City and soon married Donald Island. The young couple settled in Palo Alto, California where Beverly worked as an assistant at Stanford Research Institute.  Later they moved to Nashville, Tennessee where Beverly was a homemaker and active mother to her three children.

Beverly had a passion for gardening and designing green living spaces.  She was an early proponent of alternative energy and with the help of a local group and her father’s construction assistance, converted her home garage to a solar space, designed and added a green house and deck, and even laid the brick pattern for the floors and patio.  She was president of her local garden club, loved to entertain, and was known for her fabulous raviolis and Dutch apple hotcakes.

Predeceased by her husband of more than 50 years, and her sons, Michael and Larry, Beverly is survived by her daughter Terry, her grandchildren: Jade, Ananda, Joshua, Rachel and Jon; her great grandchildren: Braden, Elise, Evan, Betsy and August, as well as her nieces and nephews, cousins, and good friends. Visitation will be on Thursday, April 5 from 2 to 4 pm at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD. Internment will be in the Black Hills National Cemetery in South Dakota.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Iona Senior Services, www.iona.org.
